The big wave pre-season lit up Mavericks this morning, with waves along the Northern California coastline ranging from overhead to double overhead at most exposed breaks, while standouts were pulling up to triple overhead sets. The forecast showed 8-10ft+ swell with occasional 14 footers for SF-San Mateo County, and the solid WNW groundswell arrived for big wave frothers on Thursday morning.
In the lineup today were big wave surfers: Shawn Dollar, Colin Dwyer, Darryl “Flea” Virostko, Anthony Tashnick, Grant Washburn, Bianca Valenti, Nic Vaughan and Zane Kekoa Schweitzer, among other chargers amping on northwest ground swells.

Women are pretty out-numbered in any big wave lineup. This particular day at Mavericks consisted of some of the best big wave chargers, and Bianca was definitely one of them.
The Marin County resident won the 2014 Big Wave World Tour competition at Nelscott Reef, the Dive N’ Surf Oregon Pro, in which 8 top female big wave surfers faced Mother Nature to push the limits of their sport.
“The last 2 days I was honored and grateful to have the opportunity to surf Mavericks for my first time! I’ve always been curious about the powerful, cold water wave, and to have the ropes shown to me by local boy and great friend of mine, Matt Becker, was unreal!,” posted Zane Kekoa Schweitzer. “I wasn’t expecting to be up here, but when there’s an opportunity in front of me like this, it’s hard not to pull the trigger! Mahalo for all da help and loaned equipment Boyz!”
Thursday was only the beginning of preparation for the Titans of Mavericks, the official Mavericks big wave surfing event, festival and new lifestyle brand in Northern California. The competition window officially opens January 1st through March 31st each year.
