New York surf culture was alive and well as the final day of the Volcom Unsound Pro kicked off in fun 3 – 4 foot rippable surf at Lincoln Blvd. Competition began with the quarter finals, where Florida boys Jeremy Johnston, Noah Schweizer and Jensen Calloway all took spots in the semis along with Michael Dunphy.

As the tide dropped, ramps started opening up and Killian Garland took full advantage, making Lincoln Blvd look like a skatepark. Surf fans lined the beach to watch the action first hand.
In the Quarterfinals, past event champion Asher Nolan as well as former WCT tour competitor Benny Bourgeois weren’t able to get the scores they needed to advance. In addition to the main event, Balaram Stack and others competed in two eight-man heats for the Air-Show, with best wave taking home $500.
At the end of the Air-Show, $500 was split between Cody Thompson and Rob Kelly. Directly following, the Final heat of the day went out in front of an enthusiastic crowd of NY surf fans.
The waves were firing in the Final with Kilian surfing two back-to-back eight point waves within the first two minutes. Unfortunately for local favorite Balaram, he couldn’t quite put it together.
Competitor Jeremy Johnston posted a few solid scores but not enough to beat Kilian, while Michael Dunphy put on a solid display of surfing as well. In the end, Garland swept the competition and was awarded the top prize of $5000, a rad trophy, and some good memories.
A huge congratulations is deserved by all competitors and a huge thank you goes out to Mike Nelson and Dave Juan from Unsound Surf Shop, the sponsors and new found friends in Long Beach, New York.
On day 2 of the unsOund Pro competition – the SPY / STOKED Mentoring Expression took place, where nine under-served inner city kids traveled out to Long Beach and got treated to the VIP experience. They spent a couple hours hanging out on the beach talking to pros and sponsors, touring the event site, taking photos for media, getting a solid grip on Volcom Unsound event promo, and meeting all the athletes in the VIP section.
The kids involved had been taking part in the STOKED surf program so were excited to show off their skills during their heat! They paddled out with pro surfers Balaram Stack, Quincy Davis, Cody Thompson, Pat Schmidt, Noah Schweitzer, Mike Gleason, Blake Jones Jake Kelley, and the comp winner Killian Garland, who helped kids onto waves, stood up with them for tandem rides and gave them an awesome in-water mentoring session.
The half hour SPY / STOKED Exression Session was by far the highlight of the day, and some pretty magical moments went down, with commentators and the crowd on the beach roaring with support for the kids. The pros definitely had as much fun – and felt as much reward – as the Stoked Mentoring kids.
After the Expression Session, SPY trophies were handed out to each of the kids, for categories including “best soul arch”, “best wipe out”, “best tandem ride”, “longest ride”, etc! They were then given show bags full of goodies from sponsors of the unsOund event, including a pair of SPY sunglasses. The entire team at SPY was honored and proud to be a part of this amazing event, which resulted in an amazing day for the kids, and some great support for the amazing STOKED charity.
