Day 1 of the 2014 Volcom UnsOund Pro kicked off Thursday, September 18th in Long Beach, NY in fine form. Tropical Storm Edouard delivered some solid head high surf with favorable conditions for most of the day. Round of 96 started promptly at 8AM with competitors from the Caribbean, Hawaii, East and West Coasts battling it out getting one step closer to the prestigious Unsound Pro Trophy and 10,000.00 prize purse.
With solid surf we were able to run a full day of competition finishing the round of 96 and 3 heats of round 2. There were very few upsets with all Volcom Team riders including Noah Schweizer making their marks in round 1.
Stand outs of the day were Jeremy Johnston, with his crazy airs and fluid style, posting the highest heat total of the day.
NY’s own Leif Engstrom earned himself the highest wave score with an 8.83 for a single full rotation frontside air reverse.
Jairo Perez, Balaram Stack, Benny B, Killian Garland and Michael Dunphy were on absolute fire and will continue their campaigns over the weekend.
Volcom’s Retail tent was in full effect and set up on the newly built boardwalk at Lincoln Ave. We have the official #VolcomUnsoundPro Tee’s, Hoodies, hats and MIZU x Volcom water bottles for sale during each run day of the event as well as at Unsound Surf Shop in Long Beach, NY and the Volcom Store on Broadway in NYC.
Today (Friday, September 19th) is a Lay Day and with the weather and swell looking good for the next few days, we’ll be looking for a Weekend finish. We are also excited to bring the Stoked Mentoring X Spy Optic expression session to the event on Saturday where we will pair up Volcom Team Riders, including Alex Gray with 12 Kids from the stoked mentoring program in NYC. The kids will compete in a 30 min surf off alongside a talented group of professional surfers for what should be a rewarding and entertaining addition to the Volcom Unsound Pro. There’s nothing but good vibes here at the Volcom Unsound Pro! Hope you can join us over the weekend!
