This Sunday, September 21st from 9am to 12pm is the 23rd anniversary of Surfrider’s Paddle for Clean Water event at the Ocean Beach Pier. This event is the chapter’s longest running and generates the largest awareness, so it’s sure to be an amazing experience! Get stoked all you surfers, stand-up-paddle boarders, and ocean lovers ’cause hundreds of participants will be paddling around the Ocean Beach Pier in an effort to raise awareness about the necessity for clean water and healthy coastlines everywhere. Bring your surfboard, paddle board, kayak, body board, or any other craft you can use to paddle around the longest pier in Southern California! The Chapter is anticipating huge support, showing in a mass paddle out of solidarity for the protection of California’s cherished coastlines.
Roger Kube, Chair of the San Diego chapter, expresses, “As one of the leading organizations in San Diego County protecting our coastline, we have multiple programs that address clean water and healthy coastlines. This year’s Paddle for Clean Water aims to raise awareness about current issues impacting our ocean and beaches and how we as a community can come together to find solutions.”
There’s a little something for everyone at this event, even if you don’t plan on paddling out. On site will be a donation-based yoga class beginning for the early risers at 8:30AM. If you do plan on paddling, a free breakfast is included for you at 9am! Guest speakers will be present, including Chapter Chair Roger Kube, District 2 Councilmember Ed Harris, as well as professional surfer, world champion, environmentalist, and Surfrider Foundation board member Shaun Thomson. Throughout the day, the atmosphere will be vibing reggae with live music provided by San Diego based reggae band 2000 Tons of TNT. Also, don’t forget to purchase some raffle tickets and attend the after party at Wonderland Ocean Pub- sure to be a fun night with Radio Personality Chris Cantore there emceeing.
Chapter Manager Haley Haggerstone says, ““This event is a favorite amongst our volunteers and supporters. Even if you don’t plan on paddling, we’ll have something for you. Come out and listen to some live music, hear from our guest speakers, and cheer on the paddlers from the pier.” Event featured this Sunday, September 21st at Ocean Beach Pier from 9am to 12pm.
