The Hurley Pro at Trestles and the Swatch Women’s Pro Trestles will play host to the world’s best surfers from September 9 – 20, 2014 at one of the most high-performance waves on the planet, Southern California’s Lower Trestles. The Men’s Top 34 and Women’s Top 17 favor the world class point break at San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente, as the “skatepark” of surfing – one of the most antipicated events on Tour.
Watch a classic Lowers contest, when Kelly Slater (USA) defeated Joel Parkinson (AUS) in the 2012 final:
“Trestles is a very consistent wave, and for high-performance surfing there’s no better wave in the world, especially when conditions are good, so it’s great to have a longer waiting period this year so we can take advantage of the best waves,” said ASP Commissioner, Kieren Perrow.
“In order to do well at Lower Trestles, surfers will need to show a variety of maneuvers and really push the boundaries and I can’t wait to see what the ASP Top 34 and Top 17 have in store. On the men’s side Gabriel Medina will be one to watch but, when the waves are big enough, Jordy Smith can be devastating. I’m really looking forward to having the women at the competition this year and I’m excited to watch Carissa Moore and Tyler Wright compete because of their power turns,” Perrow continued.
“The forecast is looking great. It looks like we’re going to have some really fun waves for the first few days and there’s a promising outlook for the second week.”
“Lower Trestles is the event that I’m most excited for this year because it will smash the performance barriers for women’s contest surfing,” said Women’s Commissioner, Jessi Miley-Dyer. “I’m looking to see progression, and I know that the girls have been practicing innovation. I’ve seen them doing it and I can’t wait to see them bring it to the competition.”
Surfline, official forecasters for the Hurley Pro and Swatch Women’s Pro Trestles, have called for:
Fun and very rippable SSW Southern Hemisphere swell will prevail for the first few days of the event waiting period and we may even see some lingering SSE swell from current Hurricane Norbert at that time as well. Long range models point to a solid SW to SSW swell for the back half of the waiting period around the 16th-18th.
Kelly Slater (USA), currently sitting in 2nd place on the WCT rankings, has taken six wins at Lower Trestles, more than any other surfer, with victories in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Gabriel Medina (BRA), ASP World No. 1, will be looking to better last year’s 13th place finish in Southern California and cement his lead in the World Title race.
ASP Women’s World No. 1 Carissa Moore (HAW) will lead a field of the world’s best female surfers to compete at the famed cobblestone break of Lower Trestles for the first time in WCT history. With two wins so far this season the reigning two-time ASP Women’s World Champion will have to battle hard keep her place atop the rankings. Local favorite Courtney Conlogue (USA) will be eager to post a good result after a three event absence due to an ankle injury sustained in Bells Beach earlier this season.
“I cannot wait to get the jersey back on,” said Courtney Conlogue. “It’s great to have an event in my own back yard at a world-class wave like Lower Trestles. I’m excited that this is my first event back and there’s a good swell on tap.”
Wildcards Tanner Gudauskas (USA), Carlos Munoz (CRI) and Mahina Maeda (HAW) will compete alongside the ASP Top 34 and Top 17 respectively.
