Four-time ASP women’s world champion Lisa Andersen is raring to go in the third annual SurfAid Cup Malibu on Saturday, September 6th in Los Angeles, California. Andersen was part of the Malibu Mavericks team when they won the inaugural SurfAid Cup in 2012.
Nine fundraising teams have entered the event so far with three team spots still open. Teams of four surfers aim to raise at least $5,000 for SurfAid and, in order of their fundraising total, each team picks a pro/legend surfer to join them. (Teams can contact Emily Taylor firstname.lastname@example.org to enter.)
“I am so looking forward to competing in this year’s SurfAid Cup,” Andersen said. “This event is special to me because it raises funds to help communities in the Mentawai Islands, where I just visited a couple of weeks ago to surf some of the best waves in the world. The format of this event is so much fun and that’s what surfing is all about.”
A bonus of competing is getting the chance to surf the classic Malibu pointbreak with only a few people in the water. Besides Andersen, other pro surfers who have indicated they will compete include: two-time ASP women’s world longboard champion Jen Smith, elite big wave rider Greg Long, ASP World Tour surfers Travis Logie and Adrian Buchan, Strider Wasilewski, Kassia Meador, Rosy Hodge and Taylor Knox.
The tag-team SurfAid Cup is part of the MSA Classic Invitational, which is presented by the Malibu Surfing Association from September 5 – 7. The teams compete in one-hour heats, with four teams battling out the final. An Expression Session will also be held at Malibu on Friday September 5 as a warm-up for the competitors.
