Big wave surfer Bianca Valenti discusses the new expression session added to the Mavericks Invitational, the first heat allowing women to compete at the iconic big wave surf spot. The heat will most likely be one hour long, containing eight to ten of the best women currently in big wave surfing. Since the event will only be hosting one heat for women, it is likely to have more competitors than a typical men’s heat.
Valenti hopes to round up the best big wave female surfers including Savannah Shaughnessy, Paige Alms, Sarah Gerhardt, and Keala Kennelly sharing, “we need to come together and get out there whenever possible and surf Mavericks on any swell that is breaking.” While women and men may surf together at some point at Mavericks, Valenti likes the idea of getting to go out there with all women similar to the opportunity men currently have.
