Hawaiian big wave surfer, Makuakai Rothman, won victory today in 40-ft+ surf in Peru after completing his first ever ASP Big Wave World Tour event. The Billabong Pico Alto competition kicked off the new BWWT season in solid conditions with big open faces to work with, a few lefts on offer and little-to-no wind.
A stacked final heat also included: Mavericks locals Anthony Tashnick (2nd) and Shawn Dollar (3rd), local Peruvian favorite Gabriel Villaran (4th), BWWT champions Grant “Twiggy” Baker (5th) and Californian Greg Long (6th).
Rothman charged the cold waters at Punta Hermosa and never lost a heat leading up to the final. His final ride sealed the deal, scratching into a steep drop and barely holding on for what appeared to mimic Shane Dorian’s tripod maneuver during the 2014 Mavericks Invitational. The critical section matched with a long Peruvian ride granted Rothman a 9.40 score and a giant check to bring home to his family.
In his acceptance speech, Rothman gave a shout-out to his baby girl, just born three days before the event. He surfed the entire day with a hospital wristband on his arm in her honor for good luck.
