ASP number six, Adriano De Souza (BRA), suffered a fractured nose today after another surfer’s board struck his face while freesurfing. De Souza stated on his Facebook, that while he was inside the tube, an inexperienced surfer tried to avoid him, but couldn’t pull out as the tail of the surfboard hit the ASP athlete’s nose. He reported that he will undergo one, maybe two surgical procedures to fix a separated septum.
“Thanks God it wasn’t worse,” De Souza posted on Facebook. “This accident could have left me out of the water for many years if the board had hit me somewhere else in the head.”
De Souza is scheduled to have two surgeries, first in the next 24 hours to set his nose in place and get him up and running for the J- Bay event in South Africa. Then he will have to wait until the end of his competing season in December for septum repositioning and possible plastic surgery to make further corrections.
Doctors have confirmed that he will be ready to compete within 20 days.
Fellow brazilian Maya Gabeira also broke her nose recently after suffering a brutal wipeout at Teahupo’o in Tahiti.
We wish them both the best on their road to recovery.
