Students from over 25 California colleges and universities paddled out with professional surfer Ian Walsh for the Red Bull Switchboard event at Huntington Beach last Saturday. Within minutes of starting, the beach at Goldenwest and PCH was littered with surfboards, snowboards, and frothing coeds. The music was turned up and Red Bull was fueling the crowd with stacks of breakfast burritos and gallons of Red Bull.
Huntington Beach provided excellent sunny conditions and rideable waves for all who attended. Although the waves weren’t the largest Walsh has ever ridden, they were big enough for the XXL wave rider to throw some spray. As he puts it, it was perfect conditions for an event that’s as inclusive to all skill ranges as Switchboard is.
Red Bull organized the gear for everyone at the event and even provided those who didn’t bring boards some Rusty sticks to try out. The surf session went from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and then everybody loaded up into buses and hit the road to Bear Mountain Resort to shred the slopes.
