Professional big wave surfer, Shawn Dollar, is turning heads with his Ride of the Year entry into the 2014 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards. The big wave surfer dropped into a bomb this January at the famous monster surf break in Half Moon Bay, California. Mavericks is a monumental spot recognized as one of the world’s wildest waves.
“Today was the best day of big Mavericks surf since 2010,” ShawnDollar told Off The Lip Radio Show.
As a Santa Cruz resident, Dollar is no stranger to the dangers that surfing Mavericks entails. He made history in 2010 at the Mavericks Competition Expression Session by riding the biggest wave ever paddled into in the world. His 55ft wave remained the world’s largest wave paddle-surfed until Shane Dorian paddled into a 57ft wave at Jaws in 2011. Dollar stole back the title in 2013, surfing a 61ft giant at Cortes Bank off the coast of San Diego, and is currently fiercely defending his record.
The 2014 Billabong XXL Ride of the Year will award $50,000 to the surfer who exhibits the most control down the face of some of the most colossal waves from start to finish. The prize will be awarded this summer at the Grove Theater in Anaheim, California.
