At the recent TEDxManly, SurfAid founder Dr. Dave Jenkins gave a presentation called “Do something that matters,” about his conceiving the idea for SurfAid, the international organization that focuses on community development and emergency assistance to improve the health, well-being and self-reliance of people living in isolated regions of Indonesia.
In 1999, Dr. Jenkins went searching for a much-needed getaway to the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia to escape his stressful world of being a doctor in a corporate world. In addition to perfect waves, weather, and tranquility, Jenkins discovered disease, malnutrition, poor hygiene, and a high death toll. With a clear snapshot of suffering frozen in his mind, the physician returned to Singapore with an entirely new outlook on the important aspects of life. After teaming up with world renowned public health specialist, Dr. Steve Hathaway, and lawyer Phil Dreifuss, Jenkins founded SurdAid.
