Congratulations to the world’s first female Big Wave World Tour Champion, Bianca Valenti (USA). The Southern California native competed in the Dive N’ Surf Oregon Pro against fellow big wave waterwomen: Andrea Moller (BRA), Keala Kennelly (HAW), Jamilah Star (USA), Savannah Shaughnessy (USA), Paige Alms (HAW), Wrenna Delgado (USA) and Mercedes Maidana (ARG).
28-year-old Bianca Valenti locked down a high score of an 8.50 and backed it up with a 6.83 to solidify her win at the prestigious event.
Nelscott Reef is located in Lincoln City, just off the coast of Oregon where 5/4 wetsuits, booties, and gloves are a must. Despite the harsh conditions, the eight women invited were the first to paddle without hesitation that day to kick off the event. Since female competitors had never been invited to an event on the BWWT prior to this, the 2014 Dive N’ Surf Oregon Pro made history and a huge statement for female big wave surfers around the world.
A $5,000 prize purse was divided amongst the finalists.
“So thankful to everyone for all the support,” Bianca posted on Instagram @furtherandbiancs. “I am stoked! Much love and gratitude.”
Note from the Editor:
Congrats to Bianca Valenti, the first women to ever be crowned champion at a Big Wave World Tour event. What a huge accomplishment for women everywhere. We hope there are more opportunities to come for the ladies to shine in massive surf as the big wave surfing women progress the sport to new heights.
The Surf Channel would like to thank all the sponsors and supporters of the Women’s Super Heat event in Oregon.
Our thoughts are with competitor Mercedes Maidana, who suffered a concussion and abration to her forehead during the final in a dangerous wipeout. The women in the event all put their lives on the line without any pursuit of a prize purse, many flying out on their own dime to participate in the event. Local sponsors stepped up before the 5 minute horn, supplying the first prize purse for any women’s big wave event of $5,000 thanks to Chinook Winds Casino and Resort and Ninkasi Brewing Company.
All of the women out in the lineup are champions, and we thank you for leading the way and inspiring us all to charge hard.
