The final day of Volcom Pipe Pro competition was an epic display of Pipeline glory, ending with the King, Kelly Slater, ripping through Backdoor barrels with ease claiming the day as his best session all winter. So thankful for competition webcasts!
The 2014 Volcom Pipe Pro champion let some other warriors catch a few bombs, such as local Mason Ho who had such a killer performance that he also earned the Todd Chesser Award.
And then, there were the Brazilian chargers that silenced the beach as well as critics. Wiggolly Dantas came second only to Slater, proving that time well spent at Pipe during the winter months will indeed pay off. WCT competitor Adriano de Souza looked super hungry for a podium finish as well, coming in fourth in the finals.

Kelly started off early in the final snagging an open Backdoor tube within the first 5 minutes racking up a massive 9.53 then backed it up almost immediately with a 6.17. Subsequently the ocean offered up a select few opportunities for the other competitors during the next several minutes. Mason Ho then scored a solid 7.70 at the finals half way point and held 2nd place until a late flurry of waves shuffled the positions. Adriano de Souza scored a dramatic 8.43 taking 2nd place until Wiggolly Dantas tuned in with Pipe and paddled into two lefts within a couple minutes, the first an 8.27 and the second a 5.5.
Eleogram looked to be on track for his second consecutive Volcom Pipe Pro final today, posting some of the highest wave scores in the round of 32. Then tragedy struck in the quarters when his cranked a hard bottom turn into a big barrel and got caught by the crashing lip of the wave. His board hit him and broke his leg. He had to be rescued from the water by Hawaiian Water Patrol, carried up the beach and escorted to hospital where he learned he will need surgery and pins.
“This was some of the best Pipe I’ve ever surfed in my life,” said Slater. “There were some really gnarly, intense, kind of vicious waves this morning. It was really doubling up, a new swell…”
The performance of the day was eventual champion Kelly Slater in his round of 32 heat, first scoring a 9.73 on a massive backdoor runner, then perfect 10 point ride with an unreal air-drop into a gaping Pipe tube-ride, finally backing it up with a 9.77 by stalling on his backhand for a lengthy Pipe barrel. “That was some of the best Pipe I’ve ever surfed in a contest.” Slater stated on the podium after being crowned the champ.
A special congratulations out to Mason Ho for earning the Todd Chesser award as well as Stevem Kassin for winning the Give Like Sion Grand Prize and a trip to the 2015 Volcom Pipe Pro!
