26-year-old Brazilian big wave charger, Maya Gabeira, will be featured in a photo spread in the February issue of GQ Magazine. The Red Bull athlete has a little extra time on her hands this winter season due to a frightening injury suffered at Nazaré just months ago. As she nurses a broken ankle back to health, Gabeira is working on different projects, including this photoshoot with GQ.
Check out her feature in “Storm Surfers”:
Female surfing seems to walk the fine line between celebration of a strong athletic physique, and overt sexuality with the typical “lifestyle shoot.” Some argue that Gabeira’s confident and sexy shots are an example of her powerful role as a female big wave surfer in a male dominant sport. Others, however, find such marketing tactics to be disastrous to the progression of female athletes and establishing a solid presence amongst men.
With that said though, there is certainly no denying the amount of attention it brings to female surfing, the 20,000 views in two days easily speaks for itself. Don’t forget that Maya Gabeira also charges some of the heaviest surf in the world.
