The Body Glove Mavericks Invitational 2014 presented by GoPro documented one of the best swells in competitive surfing. Athletes, safety personnel, media and spectators circled the channel in large fishing boats, jet skis, motorboats and kayaks to watch one of the largest swells to hit Mavs in years.
As the action unfolded, many other athletes also experienced the wrath of Mavericks’ unruly power. In between capturing countless history-making rides by the top big wave athletes in the world, The Surf Channel collected a few of the worst wipeout shots to remind our readers that it’s not always smooth rides and perfectly executed drops out in the heaviest lineups on Earth.
Quiksilver‘s Mark Healey kicked off the first of the heavy wipeouts suffered on Friday in just Heat 1. The North Shore native took two waves on the head by the time he got safely back into the lineup, getting everyone’s hearts pounding right at the start of the event.
It’s amazing how everyone made it safely out of this one, especially Mark Healey (HAW) on the bottom right who took it on the head. Photo: Surf Channel | Emily Bates
Between the Mavericks Invitational Semi-finals and the Final, a 20-minute freesurf opened up the gates of hell to brave chargers not on the Big Wave World Tour. SUP World Champion, Kai Lenny, got out there and caught his first Mavericks wave, followed by a brutal beating caught inside and sucked over the falls.
