Local Huntington Beach residents and the entire surf community are saddened by the news of legendary surfboard shaper Bruce Jones‘ passing earlier this week. Jones suffered a severe heart attack that took his life suddenly, leaving behind his three children – Brock, Whitney, Kaitlyn – and his wife, Sheila.
If you did’t have the pleasure of knowing Bruce personally, it’s almost inevitable that you know of his signature. Bruce Jones Surfboards have dotted the lineup since 1973, when he founded his own business in Huntington Beach, California. After working for top shapers in the industry including, Hobie, Gordie, and Brewer, Jones began a legacy of his own.
With over 4 decades of history-making, surfers have been able to step into the Bruce Jones surf shop in Southern California, and always find a wide range of 200+ surfboards all hand shaped by Bruce himself, from 6’0″ to 12’0″ in length. Up until the day he passed, Jones focused on performance and durability, guaranteeing his boards to last longer than others on the market today. Bruce Jones has left a significant impression on surf culture and history as a shaper, and will be dearly missed by surf communities across coastal California.
Brock Jones posted on Bruce Jones Surfboards Facebook on Wednesday, January 15th:
“I wasn’t sure if it would be appropriate to say anything through social media, but with the outpouring of support I wanted to express my gratitude to all who have shared their love and stories.
My dad was my best friend. We did everything together. We shaped surfboards in the mornings together and screen printed t-shirts in the afternoons together. I’m grateful to have had this time with him and will miss him dearly…
Thank you, all, for the support. Rest in peace, Dad. -Brock “
Our thoughts and regards go out to the Jones family during this tough time of loss.
