While most European coastal residents are packing up and moving to higher ground to avoid the treacherous surf, local big wave surfers in Ireland are rushing towards the water. The chilly break known as Mullaghmore, located in Ireland, delivered 30ft faces on Monday for some of the best athletes in the world, some even scoring unforgettable barrel rides. RTE News reported that hundreds of people gathered at Mullaghmore to watch when they heard about what these brave athletes were doing.
Though many locals stood out in the lineup, some traveled to Ireland just for the massive swell. Sandy Kerr, a big wave surfer from Newcastle England, admitted to an RTE reporter that this would be his first time surfing Mullaghmore, and he was terrified, but would do it “for the thrill of it” anyways.
Nico Von Rupp, from Portugal, told RTE, “It’s one of the biggest storms ever. I’m just happy to be here, and hopefully come out in one piece.”
