Curtis Birch and Director Richard Yelland, in partnership with the The Inertia, are proud to announce the iTunes premiere of Sine Qua Non: The Psychology of Big Wave Surfing with Greg Long. This documentary film offers an intimate portrait of the mentality, risks, and lifestyle associated with pursuing monstrous waves around the planet through the eyes of the world’s most decorated big wave surfer, Greg Long. The film’s title, Sine Qua Non, is a Latin phrase, which means, “without which [there is] nothing.”
Sine Qua Non is directed by Richard Yelland of Curtis Birch, who most recently directed and produced Nike’s 12 Miles North, the story of the first documented African American surfer. Yelland also directed and produced Floating: The Nathan Gocke Story, which earned him Best Documentary at 2011 Cannes Film Festival’s American Pavilion Emerging Filmmaker Showcase.
“If you know what you can’t live without, then you’ll chase your dreams without compromise.” says director and producer, Richard Yelland. “In that regard, you cannot fail – no matter what the consequences,” he says.
“Anyone with a pulse and a beating heart should find this story compelling,” says The Inertia founder and producer, Zach Weisberg. “Greg Long is an exceptionally thoughtful and articulate guy, a great ambassador for the larger surfing community, and he paints a vivid picture of what it means to dedicate one’s life to pushing the limits of what’s humanly possible through the pursuit of big waves.”
Greg Long will be a guest this winter in the Turtle Bay “Talk Story” interview series in Oahu on December 4th. You can watch LIVE here on TheSurfChannel.com. For more details about the show and a list of all the invitees, click here.
