The artwork of anonymous street surf artist BERT has again surfaced with the most recent street art installation at the highly visible corner of Mission Blvd. and Thomas Ave. in Pacific Beach, San Diego. Short for Bertlemann, BERT brings surfing to the streets through art and has been using the ASP World Championship, and other surf related trends, as inspiration for these visual urban commentaries.
As of date, BERT has documented each of the past ASP World Championship Tour contests through designs all around Southern California showcasing each winner, along with the story that unfolded during the span of each contest.
BERT’s ability to dissect surf culture and reassemble it into cleverly designed street art installations has caught the attention of many of the professional surfers painted including Kelly Slater, Joel Parkinson, Jordy Smith and Brett Simpson, all whom have in one way or another expressed interest in BERT’s work. Slater and Jordy have both reposted BERT’s pieces on their instagram accounts.
Slater’s post received more than 14,500 likes and 130 comments.
