Happy Birthday to Santa Barbara native Lakey Peterson, who is celebrating 19 amazing years. The ASP World Tour competitor will spend her special day in France, following an excellent semi-final result at the Roxy Pro. Now ranked 6th on the World Rankings, Peterson will travel to Portugal for the last event of the year relaxed and re-qualifying in 2014 with confidence.
The Surf Channel: There was a huge announcement today about the women’s tour. Tell us about it.
Lakey Peterson: It’s so exciting! We have been holding it a secret since Brazil; it’s so good to be out in the open now. They just announced that the women will have an event down here at Lower Trestles next year! Thank you so much to Hurley for putting that on for us. They are going to sponsor the event and they have done such an amazing job with the guys’ event. I can only imagine what next year is going to be like…
It’s an event that all of us girls, when asked what is on the top of our list, everyone said Trestles. So blessed to have it. It’s finally going to happen and I couldn’t be more excited.
What makes Lowers so special?
LP: Lowers is such a high performance wave, it offers you so many different things. It offers airs, it offers turns, it offers carves and style, so it really shows how a person surfs and it brings out the best high performances in a surfer.
For the women, that’s really exciting because we finally get to have a wave we can show the world what we can do on. It’s really a positive for women’s surfing, with more good stuff to come.
Tell us about your film tour.
LP: Yeah, it’s been cool. My film, Zero to 100, came out at the beginning of this year . I didn’t really have expectations for it, so I didn’t know what was going to happen… It’s been doing really well. Everything that has happened has been a bonus, a surprise. We’re on Netflix and iTunes and it has had quite a few views which is awesome.
It’s just been cool to see the response, and a few people have said that it has changed their life in a certain way, which is really the point of the entire film. I just love hearing that and hearing that people like it and are stoked…
It has been a really busy year, but exciting!
