A major part of what makes the Hurley Pro such an exciting event is the pristine location where it is held. Getting to the beach at Lowers requires hiking through a peaceful valley past a Native American burial ground. The abundance of nature, trails, camping and peacefulness offered by this majestic area of Southern California, is home to some of the best waves in the United States.
Known to many surfers as their favorite break around the world, Trestles brings out some of the most impressive maneuvers seen in competition surfing. The split peak, tapered waves deliver a smooth slope with long runs. The cobblestone bottom formed in the 80’s due to wash off from San Mateo Creek have contributed to some great lefts.
This year, Kelly Slater (USA) not only returns to Lowers as the defending champion, but also as the No. 1 ranked surfer in the world. A win here may all but cement another World Title for Slater. The Florida native will have his hands full with the world’s top surfers who will be looking to close the gap in the rankings.
Mick Fanning (AUS) mathematically has the closest opportunity to catch Slater, but will need to notch his first win of the season to be within arms reach.
The rest of the Aussie crew will also be bringing major pressure with stars such as reigning World Champion Joel Parkinson (AUS), high flyers Julian Wilson (AUS) and Taj Burrow (AUS) as well as recent Billabong Pro Tahiti winner Ace Buchan (AUS), looking to make an impact on the high performance waves of Lowers.
Brazil will also be firmly in the hunt. Lowers has proven to be a perfect showcase for the famous Brazilian air shows. Stars such as top ten ranked Adriano De Souza (BRA) and 2013 Vans US Open of Surfing champion Alejo Muniz (BRA) highlight some of this years’ top athletes. Miguel Pupo (BRA), Gabriel Medina (BRA) and Filipe Toledo (BRA) will also be dangerous as the action unfolds.
Other contenders and surfers to watch will be the United States’ Nat Young (USA) and CJ Hobgood (USA), both very capable of a deep run in this contest. International stars Jordy Smith (ZAF), Michel Bourez (PYF), and Jeremy Flores (FRA) are all looking for a big WCT win. The young stars from Hawai’i, John John Florence (HAW) and ASP World Tour rookie Sebastian Zietz (HAW) can shake things up in a hurry with their go-for-broke style. Local favorite Patrick Gudauskas (USA) will be bringing an energized crowd with him as he competes at his home break.
Lower Trestles at San Onofre Beach in southern California will offer the perfect backdrop for the 2013 Hurley Pro. From the culture, ambiance and local style to the nature, serenity and powerful high performance waves, surfers and fans will get the best of what South Orange County has to offer, as well as being treated to one of the most exciting stops on the ASP World Tour.
