Atlantic City was spared by Hurricane Sandy, yet just 30 minutes from New Jersey’s casino capital, surf communities remain under piles of sand as towns struggle to rebuild in a tough economy one year after the superstorm. That’s one of the reasons why the AC DO Pro Beach Volleyball Invitational is warmly welcomed by city officials this weekend, bringing needed tourism and economic growth to Jersey’s coastal communities. The Surf Channel is proud to support the IMG Worldwide event in an effort to join forces within our two sports, primarily lifestyle based and beach focused.
Atlantic City Alliance is proud to present the 2013 AVP DO AC Pro Beach Volleyball Invitational, the fourth stop on the AVP Tour. Top five teams per gender will qualify based on the points and one team per gender will advance from Friday’s qualifiers (two wildcards per gender will be held and will go to the 6th and 7th ranked teams in the event they are not used).
Remember the “Jersey Shore” reality show where Snooki and Pauly D would strut their spray-tanned bods down the Seaside Heights boardwalk? Whether you admit watching the show or not, that area was completely taken out by the Hurricane and devastated the region. One picture of the submerged roller coaster reminds the East Coast of how important it is to focus on rebuilding the tourism sector.
The AVP DO AC Pro Beach Volleyball Invitational, the only East Coast stop on the 2013 AVP tour, returns to Atlantic City and will feature the exclusive invitation of the top 16 men’s and women’s teams in beach volleyball to compete in one of the top, tourism, entertainment and sport destinations along the Atlantic Ocean. Together, the Atlantic City Alliance, IMG and AVP will host the prestigious invitational as the fourth and only east coast stop on the 2013 AVP Tour, and will feature some of the most celebrated beach volleyball players in the world, including New Jersey native Ryan Doherty, Olympians Kerri Walsh-Jennings, Sean Rosenthal, Jake Gibb, April Ross, Jen Kessy, three-time Manhattan Beach Open champ Whitney Pavlik and more, who will battle for the DO AC Pro Beach Volleyball title and a piece of the $100,000 prize purse.
NBC News announced that the tournament will bring tourism and economic support to the New Jersey coastal community, which affects the surf community and local surf schools and shops.
