How does a free sporting event revolving around world class athletes turn into chaos and destruction? Watch the video below captured by Cassidy Summers to see what happens when one person detonates an aggressive crowd that eventually leads to property destruction, fights and fires. Huntington Beach police were forced into riot gear and to use tear gas and rubber bullets to control the crowd. Several streets were closed down for hours and hotels, restaurants and shops were on lock down to protect their guests.
Read as video filmer Cassidy Summers gives a frightening personal account of what happened in Huntington Beach on Sunday:
“I had just got done surfing with my nephew. I got a phone call from my sister asking if I was okay because there was a riot going on. I instantly got my camera and headed down to main street.
“When I arrived, I was standing in front of IHOP. I witnessed many people chanting and shouting. The cops were lined up on the other side of the street. The rioters were faced off with the cops. Every now and then the cops would shoot rubber pellets into the crowd.
“Somebody lit a fire. The police officers began moving toward the crowd, so the stampede came back in my direction. When they arrived, they began hitting the stop sign. One guy then bent the stop sign to the ground and others began stomping on it. They picked the stop sign up and held it toward the police, as if to say to them, ‘Stop’ and everybody started chanting.
“The cops continued forward. The people moved in three directions. Some continued up main street, others went south or north. The people that came south began to attempt to turn a city vehicle over. They failed.
“Then they threw what seemed to be a parking barricade through the back of the city vehicle, shattering the glass and causing an eruption in the crowd. The police continued their march forward and the rioters continued to move away. I moved into a parking structure for safety.
“After that, I skateboarded around to follow officers to see what they where up to. They were very strategic in their movements. They formed a complete box around main street and pushed everybody out. I really got to hand it to the officers of HB; they tolerated a lot of idiots and really performed well.”
