SMASH FEST is four-day event that will span across the New York area, from NYC to Long Beach, Montauk and Rockaway Beach. Featuring director Q&A’s and a short film competition, SMASH FEST is a profit sharing surf film festival for independent filmmakers. Profits from screenings will be shared with each filmmaker, allowing an opportunity for directors and producers to help recoup the costs for their hard work on their films.
In addition to SMASH FEST hosting and screening first-rate independent surf films by well-known filmmakers like Rocky Romano, SMASH FEST is also hosting a short film competition. Partnered with KIND Healthy Snacks to give local New York filmmakers the opportunity to participate in New York’s first-ever, 24-hour short surf film competition.
Benjamin Potter, Davina Grincevicius, Etan Blatt, James Katsipis, Nate Best and Thomas Brookins are the six lucky filmmakers chosen to represent their respective local surf communities. With $1000 on the line, filmmakers will be competing for the most votes by the viewers. Given just 24-hours on July 8th, filmmakers were asked to assemble a team to write, film, direct, edit and screen a two-minute short film.
The 24 hour short films will be presented during the festival on July 25th to July 28th at the start of every official feature film screening. The winning film will be voted on by SMASH FEST audiences through the festival’s to-be-released SMASH App for iPhone and Android.
The festival’s goal is to bring together surfers from everywhere to celebrate the contemporary and historically significant aspects of surfing and the New York culture. The Surf Channel is excited to support surf filmmakers, the East Coast surf community and the Surf Film and Art Festival SMASH 1.
