Surfers at El Porto in Manhattan Beach had some unexpected company Tuesday night. During a routine fly over, LA officials spotted what appeared to be two large sharks swimming dangerously close to surfers. After investigating the waters, lifeguards could only account for a juvenile, 6 foot shark, believed to be a great white swimming close to the break. Starting Wednesday morning, El Porto has since been reopened and lifeguards remain vigilant for anymore possible sightings.
Juvenile Great White sightings off the Southern California coast are not uncommon during these summer month. Juveniles learn how to hunt the waters just beyond the break. However, the recent increase in sightings are raising concerns amongst beach residents and surfers.
