The Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang, Indonesia is known as the ultimate tube riding contest. To celebrate the Invitational’s ten-year anniversary and official mark as Indo’s longest running surf competition, Rip Curl states they have “extended the event waiting period to a grand total of six weeks to ensure catching an epic swell for the ‘one’day, one swell’ event.”
On June 30th, the day before the July 1st start date for the six-week waiting period, two Balinese surfers earned wildcard berths and secured their spots into the competition by beating out 14 other local Balinese surfers at the trials.
Kuta Beach local Rahtu Suargita placed first, in front of Uluwatu local Alik Rudiarta who landed the second place title. Keeping to the Cup’s reputation, Padang reef produced 4-5 ft tubes from start to finish, giving the 16 locals quite a competition.
Suargita has been a longtime invitee to the Rip Curl Cup, so the first place win brought with it another first.
“This is the first time I’ve had to get into the main event from the trials and it actually feels amazing.” Suargita tells Rip Curl, “To win the trials here and be recognized is a big honor.”
Earning second place gave Rudiarta the chance to surf the Padang Cup for the first time. He proved himself by surfing solid sets throughout the day and scoring the day’s highest heat total in the semi-finals.
The day wrapped up with Suargita and Rudiarta being crowned on the awards podium in front of a crowd filled with the 32 invited surfers, split between Indo’s most impressive 16 local surfers and the 16 top tube riders around the world.
To close the opening ceremony, I Gusti Ngurah Putra, a representative from the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy praised not only Rip Curl but the sport of surfing as a whole for the massive amount it has showcased “Indonesia’s world-class waves and hospitality to a global audience like never before.”
To end the night and continue with the high spirits and rich culture that Padang Padang embodies, a traditional traditional Balinese kecak dance performance to ask the gods for permission to hold the contest at a traditionally sacred spot and provide a massive swell during the upcoming six-week waiting period.
