OneWave, a non-profit surf community has traveled all the way from Sydney, Australia to show Venice Beach what they are about. OneWave was established this year to help raise awareness and show support for anyone who has ever experienced or knows someone who has suffered depression, anxiety or bi-polar disorders. Their motto is, “One wave is all it takes to get you out of the funk.” This Friday, One Wave is holding a Fluro Friday at Venice Beach starting at 1pm.
OneWave was founded by two friends, Grant Trebilco and Sam Schumacher, who met and instantly knew that they needed to create something bigger then the career they were in. Grant worked in the marketing world for Tequila and Sam was managing a bar called The Backroom Sydney and teaching grommets how to surf on the side. Grant has a history of depression and bi-polar in his family and is a strong believer that one wave is all it takes to get through a hard time in your life even when it seems impossible at the time.
Fluro Friday is an event that welcomes surfers and non-surfers to come paddle out and get to know the local surf community. People dress in neon and come out and a catch a wave with One Wave. The founders of OneWave hope that one day they won’t have to set up these events and that their vision will spread world wide. Their message is that everyone goes through a rough patch it could be a bad break-up or loosing your job. One wave is all it takes to get you out of that funk and inspired.
Through the One Wave community people can be supported and can be revived. Their main goal is to create a wider community of people who acknowledge that people have their ups and downs but that there is always someone who can go and catch one wave with you to get you stoked!
OneWave has spread their Fluro Friday event to South Bondi, North Steyne Manly, Maui and now to Southern California.
OneWave encourages surf communities all around the world to start their own Fluro Fridays and to tag photos to the OneWave facebook page and tagging #onewave and #flurofriday.
