The Malibu Surfing Association (MSA) is gearing up for their annual MSA Classic Invitational from September 6-8, 2013 at the world famous First Point at Malibu’s Surfrider Beach. The MSA Classic Invitational is one of the seven contests comprising the Coalition of Surfing Clubs‘ annual circuit. According to the Malibu Surfing Association, “it serves as a celebration of the Southern California beach lifestyle,” and a reminder of the contribution Malibu has played in the history and culture of surfing.
Last year’s MSA Classic Invitational included the Board Art Benefit with proceeds from sales of the original works of art benefitting SurfAid International, raffles, and an awards party. More than 300 athletes from around the world including the United States, Hawaii, Australia, Italy, Spain, Japan, and Taiwan participated in the MSA Classic Invitational surfing events. The surfing events featured 13 contest age divisions for men and women, a nose-riding only event, a tag-team longboard event, and the SurfAid Cup to benefit SurfAid International. Last year’s MSA Classic Invitational raised more than $60,000 for SurfAid. SurfAid will once again serve as this year’s named charity partner in support of their humanitarian programs.
The mission of SurfAid is “to improve the health well-being, and self-reliance of people living in isolated regions connected to us through surfing.” The SurfAid Cup is a contest consisting of eight teams competing to raise top dollars for the non-profit. The team with the most money raised gets first choice of a pro surfer who will compete on their team for a total of 5 surfers. The teams then battle it out in relay or tag-team style, one-hour heats. Last year’s legendary appearances included those by Simon Anderson (inventor of the thruster surfboard), three-time ASP world champ Tom Curren, four-time women’s ASP world champ Lisa Andersen, 1976 world champ Peter “PT” Townend, and current ASP Women’s WCT star Courtney Conologue. Last year’s winner of the SurfAid Cup was Lisa Anderson with the Malibu Mavericks team raising $13,640 for SurfAid.
Last year’s event proved as another success, and this year will once again be a memorable event for celebrating the history of Malibu and the culture of surfing.
