On May 11th The Surfing Heritage and Culture Center (SHACC) had their first biennial Surfing Heritage Vintage Surf Auction “California Gold” that went off at the OC Fair & Events Center in Costa Mesa and was filled with over 600 surfers and collectors. Following the success of the auction, SHACC has an upcoming event you won’t want to miss!
An image has the ability to shape the media and influence society in which it is created. A perfect example of an artist that has made a lasting impression in the world of graphic design is John Van Hamersveld. SHACC is hosting the incredible opportunity to celebrate the release of John Van Hamersveld’s new book 50 Years of Graphic Design in which John will talk about his varied and eventful prestigious career followed by a Q & A session.
John Van Hamersveld is an American graphic artist and illustrator born in Baltimore in 1941. While he attended the Art Center College of Design he also began his professional career as art director at the acclaimed Surfer magazine. The well known promotional poster for the iconic surf film The Endless Summer, was Van Hamersvelds groundmaking step into his creative success.

His talents also led him to creating concert posters promoting for megastars like Jimi Hendrix, The Who and more. By the late ’60s, he was hired as an art director at Capitol Records where he created 300+ album covers including The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour. To say the least, few artists have had such a lasting impact on the world of graphic design and surf culture. Given that the event is free, it is SHACC’s hope that visitors will buy one of John’s books or posters in which a part of the proceeds will go to support the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center. Don’t miss out!
