Aside from a flat day at the beach, a shark attack is one of surfer’s biggest fears. Unfortunately for 16-year-old surfer Michael Adler, this rare and traumatic experience recently happened to him. ABC News released the story yesterday about Adler and four friends enjoying the swell at Melbourne Beach, Florida (which is a known home for bull sharks) when he suddenly felt something pierce through his leg. As soon as Adler realized it was a shark, he began paddling as fast as he could to get to safety. Luckily, a stranger who happened to be a man with military training, knew how to use a leash as a tourniquet on his wounded leg, saving Adler’s foot.
Being a dedicated surfer, Adler has plans of returning to the ocean as soon as he can. When questioned, he stated with confidence, “I am definitely going to surf in the future,” he said. “I wish I could surf tomorrow.”
Thankfully, Adler doesn’t even seem phased by this event and has a positive, funny attitude about it. According to his Twitter account, his main concern is that he gets on Discovery Channel’s: “Shark Week” after surviving this attack.
The ABC News video shows Adler in the hospital telling the story about the shark attack and how the brave stranger saved his leg:
