In his first ever final and only the second event of his rookie career on the ASP World Tour, Nat Young made Santa Cruz prouder than ever as the California kid blasted through to the finals of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in Victoria, Australia. There was only one remaining Brazilian in the lineup more determined to ring the bell, and put a stop to the California steamroll.
A firey battle against the Brazilian star, Adriano de Souza, took place today in an unexpected final match-up after the favored local Australian surfers were knocked out earlier in competition. Souza’s spectacular performance throughout the event had the judges on a string, as the first Brazilian to take a Bells win overcame with emotion, taking the stage and ringing the bell so hard that it literally fell right off the trophy.
It’s debatable whether a goofy-footer is at an advantage at Bells, but Nat Young proved himself on his backside. His powerful surfing made quite a statement as Young gains momentum and a massive fan base down under.
If Nat Young had won, he would have been tied with World Champion Kelly Slater for No. 1 in the world rankings. No doubt that the California kid is going to create quite a buzz going into the next event, as a bright future on the ASP World Tour awaits him. The final result of the Rip Curl Pro will shift the top spot rankings significantly.
