Round 5 of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover was completed yesterday in building 3-4ft surf at Snapper Rocks, narrowing down the lineup to the final four competitors to battle it out for the first win of the season. World title holder and Gold Coast local favorite, Joel Parkinson (AUS), hunted down the first perfect-10 score of the competition against fellow Aussie competitor, Julian Wilson in the Quarterfinal. Not only did Parkinson impress with an incredible single wave score, but he also took home credit for the highest heat total of the day with an 18.27 out of 20. The Semifinalists were narrowed down to the following match-ups when competition resumes: Joel Parkinson (AUS) vs. Michel Bourez (TAH), and Kelly Slater (USA) vs Mick Fanning (AUS).
Watch the Heat Highlights from a classic day of ASP World Tour competition in Round 5 and the Quarterfinals of the Quik Pro:
“That was an amazing heat to be in,” Parkinson said. “Julian (Wilson) is one of the most exciting surfers in world. Even with a 10, you’re never safe with him. It’s one of those heats that’s a big match-up on paper and there were some big exchanges going down between us.”

Tahitian powerhouse, Michel Bourez (PYF) took down defending champion Taj Burrow (AUS) in a nail-biting Quarterfinal battle. Bourez will face world champion, Joel Parkinson, in the semi finals when competition resumes.
Eleven time ASP World Champion, Kelly Slater (USA) posted one of the highest heat totals of the day, posting an excellent 18.03 out of 20 against Australian competitor Bede Durbidge (AUS).
“That was a fun heat and it definitely improved for me towards the end,” Slater said. “I’m on a new board so I didn’t feel great during the start of that heat, but it felt better with each wave and was feeling really good by the end. The waves are fun and really improved following the hold. When it’s clean like it is this afternoon, after the hold anyway, Snapper is a really fun wave.”
Mick Fanning (AUS) and Slater will meet for battle in the Semifinals of the Quikilver Pro Gold Coast.
Fanning managed to take down fellow Aussie Rip Curl teammate Matt Wilkinson (AUS) in the quarterfinals.
“Wilko (Matt Wilkinson) has really been on point this event and has been amazing on his backhand,” Fanning said. “He’s a friend and a Rip Curl teammate, but we’re both out there to win and I wasn’t taking him lightly. The waves were pretty fun and I was able to loosen up later in the heat after putting some scores on the board. It was a solid heat for me and I feel good heading into tomorrow’s final day.”
The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast will resume for the final day of the waiting period window, March 13th, 2013 in Australia.
