Garrett McNamara has withdrawn the entry to the Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards 2013 for his massive wave ridden at Nazaré in Portugal. McNamara disclosed his reason in an interview with SURFER Magazine stating, “I’m opposed to the event having an alcohol sponsor.”
In 2011, McNamara broke the world record for the largest wave ever surfed, conquering what was recorded as a 75-90 ft beast at Nazaré. Just weeks ago, McNamara caught another massive wave at the same Portuguese break, leaving the surf industry scrambling to determine the size. In a recent interview with the big wave surdfer, McNamara told the Surf Channel, “I knew it was going to be the biggest wave I’d ever surfed. In the photo (that) was taken at the end of the wave, I was kicking out, it was half as big as it was in the beginning… If you take Puerto Escondido, Jaws, Waimea Shorebreak and put them on steroids… you’ve got Nazaré.”
