Red Bull‘s Kai Lenny (HAW) set the bar for the 2013 Stand Up Paddle World Tour by winning the prestigious opening event at Sunset Beach, Hawai’i last week. Sunset Beach did not disappoint as it delivered powerful surf for the competitors throughout the competition. In the first round of the semi-finals, Lenny and Kody Kerbox (USA) put up a strong fight and took down Beau Nixon (AUS) and Ikaika Kalama (HAW) for a spot in the finals. Poenaiki Raioho (TAH) and Robin Johnston (HAW) edged ahead of Peyo Lizarazu (FRA) and Kekoa Auwae (HAW) in the second round of semi-finals to join Lenny and Kerbox.
Hawaiian SUP riders dominated the final heat finishing in the top three positions. Kai Lenny ended the day with a score of 15.50 followed by Robin Johnson in second with a 9.95 and third place was awarded to Kody Kerbox with a 9.35. Tahitian surfer Poenaiki Raioha finished in fourth in the final round with a score of 8.
