The 2013 Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico presented by seepuertorico.com returns to the shores of Isabela this weekend – February 9 to February 13. This year’s 4-star rated ASP event hosts a field of 144 competitors including local stars and ASP WCT standouts. Athletes including CJ Hobgood, Taylor Knox, Brian Toth, Corey Lopez and more will display their world-class talent at Playa Jobos, Isabela. The promising forecast throughout the waiting period paves way for a potentially historic competition. C.J. Hobgood (Melbourne, FL), 33, ASP WCT veteran, will lead the Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico as the event’s top seed and the Flordian talent is looking forward to returning to the training grounds that helped shape his professional career.
“I always went down to Puerto Rico from Florida in January for the cold fronts as PR is the safest spot for a quick hit,” Hobgood said. “I think I’ve been going down there since I was 12 and I’m looking forward to going back this year.”
With the ASP WCT season just weeks away, Hobgood is capitalizing on the Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico to rekindle his competitive spark to kick off his 2013 campaign.
“I think all the guys on tour look for a comp to get used to the jersey again, try boards and get the body ready,” Hobgood said. “Some guys are hitting Pipe, a lot of the boys are hitting the Burliegh comp and I decided to do PR.”
Local Puerto Rican talents are ready to represent their country and shake things up with the traditional powerhouse names. Miguel Diaz earned a Round of 96 wildcard at The Coors Light Wildcard Trials at Jobos last weekend. Jobos local, Wilfredo “Control” Daliz earned a wildcard with his performance and runner-up finish. Carlos Cabrero, Puerto Rican charger was also granted the Round of 64 wildcard putting him in a great position for this weekend’s main stage.
“To be a wildcard, for me it is a great opportunity since this is the first WQS event since 1989 and to have the wildcard it is a recognition of all the years that I was competing on the professional tour,” Cabrero stated. “Thanks to Rip Curl for giving me the honor of representing Puerto Rico in this big event.”
Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico boasts to be more than a surf contest. Coors Light plans to spice up the event with live music. Steps from the main contest site, The Coors Light stage will have live music on Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9 from 8:00pm to 2:00am. Rip Curl will also host the My Bikini Walk-Off presented by The Room on Saturday, February 9 at 8:30pm.
