Alex Martins has been surfing Mavericks since 2001 and has been on the alternate list for the Mavericks Invitational competition since 2003. In 2006 he was invited as a Big Wave World Tour contestant, but put back on the alternate list the following year. Then in 2010, the last event at the iconic break, Martins was first alternate and because of an contestant injury he made it in the contest and has been in ever since. He is originally from Recife, Brazil, but has been living and working in San Francisco, California for 19 years. He has done his time as a Mavericks surfer and is ready for battle.

“I’m just a guy who works, I pay my own bills and I fix boards. I not planning on making a million dollars. I just want to get a couple waves. I do this for fun.” Surfing Mavericks for Martins is simply part of his existence.

Ask anyone who surfs or photographs Mavericks and they will tell you: Martins goes deep. Some may even say he’s psycho the way he takes off on some waves. However, Martins will tell you he’s not doing it for the magazine cover or the money.
