Founder of Ocearch Research Center, Chris Fischer, is keeping a close eye on Mary Lee, a 3,500-pound, 16.5 foot great white shark off of Jacksonville’s coast in Florida. Fischer and his team captured Mary Lee last September in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and tagged her for multiple research studies. Scientists have been tracking the massive great white and have discovered how often she dwells close to the coastline.
Generally, great whites are known for wandering the open ocean, but ever since researchers have been studying Mary Lee, it seems North Atlantic great whites tend to favor the coastline. Ocearch has made it possible for their audience all over the world to follow Mary Lee’s journey on the Shark Tracker. Science and education programs around the world are able to take advantage of the Shark Tracker and learn so much more about these interesting creatures. If you are or will be anywhere near Jacksonville soon, definitely take some time to check out where Mary Lee is cruising before paddling out!
