Joel Parkinson (AUS) Wins Billabong Pipe Masters and First ASP World Tour Championship Title

Written by:

Congratulations to Australian Billabong team rider, Joel Parkinson, for winning the 2012 ASP World Tour Championship title.  After many events finishing runner-up to some of the best athletes in the world, Joel Parkinson claimed his very first ASP World Championship title today at the Billabong Pipe Masters.  Parko was able to lock down the win after Josh Kerr (AUS) took down 11x World Champion, Kelly Slater (USA), in the Semifinals.  After an emotional champagne shower mid-competition, Parko continued surfing on to defeat Josh Kerr in the final heat to win the 2012 Billabong Pipe Masters 2012 in Memory of Andy Irons.  The awards ceremony recognized Sebastian Zietz (HAW) as the overall Vans Triple Crown winner, John John Florence (HAW) for winning the 250,000 Hawaiian Airline miles, Josh Kerr (AUS) for his runner-up finish – despite an injury earlier in the day followed by a hospital visit. Joel Parkinson ended the year sweet as can be as the 2012 ASP World Tour Champion and Billabong Pipe Masters title winner.

Parko wins!
“It’s a really surreal feeling. I have to pinch myself,” said 2012 champion, Joel Parknson. :I feel like I’ve got to man up still and surf another heat. It’s all over, it’s done.”

Sebastian Zietz (HAW) also finished at the top of the ranking granting him entry into the ASP World Championship 2013 Tour, and enough prizes he needed help carrying everything off the beach. From a Harley-Davidson motorcycle to Nixon watch and thousands of dollars, it was the honor of winning here at home in Hawaii that made Seabass more stoked than anything else, as he looks forward to his year on the road surfing the best waves in the world.

Joel Parko

“Thanks to Andy (Irons) for pushing those waves in from mother nature,” Parko said in an emotional acceptance speech. “I really felt like he was a part of me out there. He will always be a part of this event . No matter what anyone does at Pipe, it will never come close to what Andy did. Cheers to Andy for sure.”

JOel and Slater

“Today was Joel’s day,” stated  Kelly Slater. “There was probably some Andy energy there; these guys were good buddies. Andy got me again (laughs).”
