Hainan Island China kicked off the 2012 CITIC Pacific Shenzhou Peninsula Pro with the world’s best longboarders completing rounds 1 and 2 of competition yesterday. The competition was moved two kilometers up the beach from the main contest site at Riyuewan due to poor conditions. Competitors were able to work with the fun 2-3 ft waves that rolled from out the back all the way to shore.
Hawaii’s 2010 ASP World Longboard Champion, Duane Desoto, showed off his power and flow for an impressive Round 1 win. Desoto advanced directly into round 3 to face Japan’s Yuji Hata.
Despite his recent illness, Taylor Jensen (USA) was right back in the water to post an opening Round 1 win at Riyuewan. Jensen has been in bed with an IV drip for the last few days after catching a stomach bug in route to China. The reigning ASP World Longboard Champion skipped round 2 to directly advance into round 3.
Australia’s Harley Ingleby was forced to fight through Round 2 after losing to Cole Robbins (USA) yesterday. Ingleby drew event replacement surfer, long board legend and star of the world famous Endless Summer 2, ‘Wingnut.’ The Australian 2009 ASP World Longboard Champion managed to eliminate Wingnut to move onto Round 3.
A call will be made at 7:30am Hainan Island time, for a possible 8am start to Round 3. It’s likely that we will be running at the back-up location again as the same swell direction is predicted for tomorrow.
