The surf community is coming together stronger than ever for an important cause – Hurricane Sandy relief. In Letters To The Editor: East Coast Surfers Pick Up the Pieces Sandy Left Behind, Tyler Breuer from SMASH wrote The Surf Channel from New York City describing the damage and hardships that East Coast surfers had been faced with, also expressing his efforts to spearhead a fundraising event to help everyone from the Rockaways and Long Beach. SMASH is a production company that stands for Surf/Movies/Art/Shaping/History, and with their continued success leading and gathering the New York community, there was no doubt that Tyler would make it happen. We are stoked to announce an amazing event called, the New York Surf Stories: An Evening of NY Surf Films for Hurricane Relief. All proceeds will go to Waves for Water, a non-profit where 100% of the funds go to those effected by Hurricane Sandy.
On Monday, November 26th, 2012 at Anthology Film Archives in lower Manhattan (32 Second Avenue, on the corner of 2nd St & 2nd Ave), the NY surf community will come together to help raise funds for Hurricane Sandy Relief and Recovery. New York Surf Stories is an evening of locally produced surf films that focus on the New York surfing community.
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the communities of Rockaway Beach, Long Beach and many others suffered catastrophic damage and tragedy. New York Surf Stories seeks to bring the surfing community together to show our resilience and solidarity in the face of adversity.
The films selected cover a variety of genres and styles, all focusing on surfing in New York and what it means to be a surfer in this incredible community. All proceeds will go to Waves for Water, a non-profit where 100% of the fund go to those effected by Hurricane Sandy. Waves for Water has coordinated a full-fledged Hurricane Relief Initiative in response to Super Storm Sandy that has absolutely decimated the North Eastern seaboard. Raffle prizes vary from a free hotel stay at Casa de Olas in Nicaragua to an R2 Wetsuit from Patagonia to many more…
The event will be co-hosted by local professional surfer Mikey DeTemple and Waves for Water‘s Jon Rose.

SMASH (Surf / Movies / Art / Shaping / History) is a production company created by Adam Cannizzaro, Michael Machemer and Tyler Breuer, all native New Yorkers who have been actively involved in the NY surf community for more than two decades. The mission of SMASH is to present, in a public forum, a body of emerging and historical work from the local and global surf community throughout the year. SMASH represents the natural evolution of its founders’ individual past projects, which include art exhibits, live musical performances, websites, blogs and movie premieres and film screenings, including the New York Surf Film Festival. SMASH is an ever expanding effort to preserve the roots of surfing and surf culture and to educate both newcomers and established members of the surf community about the rich history of surfing while maintaining a strong connection to contemporary surf culture.
