The North Shore big wave winter competition season is just a 10 days away! The HIC PRO begins October 29th– November 10th as the major winter swells begin to hit the Hawaiian Islands.
The HIC PRO serves as a local qualifier for the 30th Anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, beginning November 12- December 20th for $1million. Fifty percent of the total 144 surfers entering the HIC PRO will consist of Hawaiian locals and the rest representing 13 different nations including Argentina, France and Australia. The 4-Star event is crucial to the ASP ratings points for the competitors.
Ezekiel Lau will represent Hawaii as the defending champion of the 2011 HIC PRO just after placing 2nd at the ASP World Junior Championships in Bali. It is possible that we will see another exciting match up between Lau and the newly crowned ASP World Junior Champion, Jack Freestone (AUS) in the HIC PRO.
Keep an eye out for the following competitors who will be challenging each other throughout the HIC PRO: Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz, 6-time Vans Triple Crown Champion Sunny Garcia, former HIC PRO Champions Billy Kemper, Pancho Sullivan & Myles Padaca, as well as Maui’s Ian Walsh and Clay Marzo. Other contenders traveling to the North Shore to compete are #1 seed Jean De Silva (BRA), former world champion Mark Occhilupo (AUS) and Joan Duru (FRA).
