The remnants of Typhoon Maliksi kicked off the winter big wave swell with massive surf at the infamous Jaws in Maui yesterday. The bravest souls of surfing paddled out in hopes to score a ride worth competing in the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards 2013.
For the past 13 years, big wave diehards have been submitting their most impressive ride to the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards in hopes to take home the money and respect. The competition for the greatest achievement in big wave riding runs the entire year to see that the very biggest and best wave is ridden, as long is it has been captured on video or by a photographer.
Though the year isn’t over yet, athletes have already submitted their best waves, including a pair of tube rides by Shane Dorian, a huge wall ridden by Makua Rothman and several excellent rides by female charger, Keala Kennelly. Shane Dorian is a multi-time XXL winner and describes finding the pathway through a massive Jaws barrel:
“I just sorta found myself in the sweet spot,” Dorian said last night. “Once I got over that boil, I just had to hang on. Pucker factor was a 10!”
Keep checking back for more updates as the swell continues firing!
