ASP Women’s World Tour athletes begin to scramble for the final chance to secure ranking points for a spot on the 2013 WCT with the 6-Star SATA Airlines Azores Pro in Sao Miguel beginning this Thursday, September 27th. Prize money total for the Women is $40.000. As the final event on the 2012 ASP Europe and International schedule, the Women’s SATA Airlines Azores Pro will be an extremely vital competition after we saw major changes happen to the potential Top 6 qualifiers in the past two events in Pantin and Estoril.
California’s Sage Erickson (USA) has worked hard to secure her number 1 spot on the ASP Women’s World Tour rankings and cannot be shifted due to the results in Azores. Bianca Buitendag (ZAF) has also created a spacious lead against other competitors and will maintain her spot by the end of the season.
Additional athletes, however, are not going to be quite as comfortable at the next event, including French squad Alize Arnaud, Pauline Ado and Justine Dupont, who all need good results in Azores to secure their positions in the world rankings.
The iconic beachbreak of Praia de Santa Bárbara has demonstrated with the Men’s SATA Airlines Azores Pro competition in the previous weeks, the potential of high performance waves on offer in Azores; if conditions come together for the girls, we could see an amazing showdown unfold in beautiful conditions to decide who will join the 2013 elite Top 17.
Womens World Tour surfers confirmed to compete in Azores this week include: Coco Ho (HAW), Rebecca Woods (AUS), Pauline Ado (FRA), Sage Erickson (USA), Justine Dupont (FRA) and Jaqueline Silva (BRA). WCT 2013 hopefuls and big names in pro surfing also competing include: Alana Blanchard (HAW), Alessa Quizon (HAW), Alizee Arnaud (FRA), Nage Melamed (HAW), Quincy Davis (USA), Bianca Buitendag (ZAF), Sarah Baum (ZAF), Joanne Defay (FRA) and Nikki Van Dijk (AUS).
