Rounds 3 and 4 of the Hurley Pro at Trestles on Wednesday, September 19th, was jam packed with unbelievable surfing as athletes and their biggest sun-cooked fans crowded Lower Trestles on San Onofre Beach, in beautiful Southern California conditions.
The first heat of the day kicked off with 11x World Champion, Kelly Slater (USA) and Australian Rip Curl athlete, Matt Wilkinson. Slater surfed strong in the first heat with a score of 8.0 within the first seven minutes and then scored another wave with a huge floater, followed by a 180. Wilko was determined to get his piece of the heat, only within the last minute caught what the commentator coined, a “juicy one” with incredible cracks off the top to score a 7.1, yet still not enough to come out on top. The heat came to a close with Slater’s final heat total of 15.70 moving him on to Round 4, saying goodbye to Wilko.
Julian Wilson (AUS) and Alejo Muniz (BRA) battled wave for wave, both taking incredible chances to try and come out on top pushing the second heat to the last 2 minutes. Wilsom boosted a 180 air and ended the wave with a clean floater. In just the last 20 seconds of the heat, Julian caught a crazy clean right, ripping it apart all the way to the inside scoring him an 8.03 for the win.
Australia’s Adrian Buchan was an impressive standout in an absolutely flawless heat #5 against Brazil’s Heitor Alves, ending with a final score of 18.13. On fire, Buchan’s huge snaps, clean cutbacks and impressive floater ended with a phenomenal wave on the inside. Buchan managed to score the second highest wave score of the day with a 9.7.
Heat #7 was home to both the highest heat total and single wave score of the day by Australia’s Joel Parkinson. With an impressive score of 9.93 out of 10 , Parko paddled into a workable right where he threw countless fin flashing turns. Taylor Knox (USA) was eliminated after Parko finished the heat with a combined heat score of 18.33.
Gabriel Medina (BRA) and Michel Bourez (PYF) put on a mind blowing air show in an exciting heat #8. Medina scored a 9.27 after catching a left and boosted a huge front side air reverse. Though never catching Medina’s score of 17.37, Bourez was a fierce competitor boosting and wrapping around cutbacks, constantly splitting the peak. Medina proved his determination to win by landing a huge 360 air on his way back in.
