Actor Russell Crowe was assisted by the US Coast Guard on Saturday evening, September 1st, 2012, off the shores of Long Island, New York City. The New Zealand borne actor, producer and musician was plucked from the waters along with a friend after calling for help when they realized that they would not make it back to dock before sundown. Recognized as a strong swimmer and kayaker, Crowe was reported to be uninjured and unharmed, only worried about taking on deep sea after dark.
“Thanks to Seth and the boys from the US Coast Guard for guiding the way … 4 hrs 30 mins,” Crowe messages on his Twitter feed. He had been in the water almost five hours when it was time to call for help, the the US Coast Guard pulled through on a routine check when they heard shouting from the two kayakers.
Media outlets have reported that Crowe was lost at sea, which Crowe responded to with, “We were not lost, we knew exactly where we were. We ran out of day,” Crowe messaged on his Twitter feed.
Russell Crowe is best known for his leading role in the film, Gladiator, in which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor. Other films with staring roles inlcude A Beautiful Mind, American Gangster, The Insider and Robin Hood.
