Toledo managed to outsurf Jack Freestone (AUS) in an exciting final where the heat lead changed a few times before the flying Brazilian comboed his opponent with a near perfect 9.53 and a 8.00 point ride netting the highest heat total of the event in the process.
“I’m super stoked! This is my best result so far for sure. I don’t have words to describe how I feel it’s just amazing, unbelievable!” Toledo exclaimed after his win. “I know Jack surfs similar to me, so I tried not to do too many airs, but you know… you got to do what it takes to get the score.”
The modest surfer made away with a podium finish at the US Open of Surfing 2012, and has been a force to wrencken with as he charges through the Prime and Star events. His huge boosting aerials have caught everyone’s attention.
Toledo impressed fans as he took out 20-year-old Australian competitor, Jack Freestone, in the finals with a total hear score of 17.53. Ranked at 25th place before the event, Felipe is virtually qualified for the 2012 World Championship Tour!
“These 2000 points are essential in my season and towards my main objective of qualifying for the World Championship Tour,” Toledo told ASP. “I feel amazing, pretty relaxed. I’m going to Virginia now and you’ll see me again in a couple of weeks in the next European event.”
Earlier in the event, Toledo took out Dion Atkinson in the semi-finals, boosting an impressive air reverse and kerrupt flip with a final score of 16.66, leaving Atkinson behind with a score of 11.50.
ASP catches up with Jack Freestone who was stoked to accumulate 1500 points as he placed 2nd in the event overall.
“My objective this season is to try and get as many good results as possible with the qualification in the back of my mind,” Freestone commented. “I already had a couple good results and this second place will help a lot as well, with plenty more events to come, so I’m looking forward to the back half of the year.”
