Join the surf community in the “Paddle for Daisy” on Sept. 1 in support of shaper Al Merrick’s eight-year-old granddaughter, Daisy, as she battles cancer for the third time.
Diagnosed with Wilms’ tumor, a type of kidney cancer that occurs in children, Daisy underwent surgery and subsequent treatments of chemotherapy and radiation. She survived her first bout with cancer, but months later Daisy complained of an unbearable stomachache—for the second time, Daisy was diagnosed with cancer. After a second intensive course of chemotherapy and prayers from friends and family, Daisy won her fight against cancer. Daisy and her family embraced the fragility of life and for once, Daisy was able to enjoy the joys of being a child—dancing jazz and ballet, playing with friends and family, laughing and living life like any seven-year-old. Following a routine scan, Daisy’s family was met with the dreaded news that their daughter had cancer for the third time.
April 11, 2012 marked the third recurring Wilms’ tumor that was removed from Daisy’s abdomen. Following the procedure, Daisy is faced with more treatments and chemotherapy. The next steps for Daisy’s full recovery include chemotheraphy and a possible stem cell transplant, the total cost not covered by insurance will total close to half a million dollars. To date, Daisy has had six surgeries, 22 rounds of chemotherapy and two courses of radiation, yet she is a ray of sunshine while she continues to fight against the aggressive and reoccurring Wilms’ Tumor.
We ask that friends, family and surfers alike join in praying for Daisy and her family.
Join together as a unified voice and paddle for Daisy on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 9 a.m. Organized paddle-a-thons are taking place along the coastlines in California, Hawaii, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida.
