We guessed it… “Teahu-Pupo” was awarded the Nixon Wave of the Day for his ridiculous barrel riding… while we are here hungry for consistent swell. Miguel Pupo (BRA) on the ASP World Tour is in Tahiti for his first time taking on the infamous Teahupo’o left. Pupo dominated Huntington at the US Open of Surfing earlier this month with a 2nd place finish to Julian Wilson (AUS).
Hungry for the podium, Miguel Pupo will be one to watch during the Billabong Pro Tahiti competition. Check out his waves below from Teahupo’o, Tahiti, from yesterday’s Round 2 action:
Watch the entire recap from Day 2 of the Billabong Pro Tahiti:
A lay day was called at Teahupo’o this morning, August 18, for the Billabong Pro, Tahiti due to inconsistent swell. The opening two rounds of competition have been completed in great conditions the previous two days, with some excellent barrel rides on offer and organizers are hopeful of resuming tomorrow.
“It’s fairly small out here today and the inconsistency is the real issue,” Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge, said. “The models are predicting a slight increase over the coming days and we’ll monitor conditions and make another call tomorrow morning.”
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 6:30am to assess conditions for a possible 7am start.
When competition resumes, up first will be two-time ASP World Champion and current ASP WCT No. 1 Mick Fanning (AUS), 31, up against Fredrick Patacchia (HAW), 30, in the opening heat of Round 3.
