Surf wax. A vital weapon in every surfer’s arsenal and a necessity for busting airs and cutbacks in the water. Thanks to innovative thinking and a passion for preserving our environment, Matunas Surf Wax has been the leader in providing surfers with an eco-friendly wax alternative. Produced on a 25-acre farm located in Santa Cruz, CA, Matt Mattoon has paved the way for surfers to shred the waves while conserving the fragile and ever-changing state of our ocean waters.
Using all-natural ingredients, Matunas is the perfect alternative to harmful petroleum-based waxes. The Surf Channel is proud to partner with Matunas as the official supplier of organic surf wax.
The Surf Channel interview with Matunas founder, Matt Mattoon:
MM: Matunas started out in 1998 from humble beginnings of pouring surf wax from my kitchen stove by using our own farm grown ingredients on our 25 acre farm in Santa Cruz. It seemed liked an obvious choice to make organic surf wax instead of the paraffin waxes on the market as it was a better alternative and overall a cleaner more sustainable product choice as a surfer. The original mold was recycled tuna cans that I was using to pour the surf wax into, and that is how the name Matunas was born – a play on my last name Mattoon, and using the container for surf wax to be tuna cans.
TSC: How long have you been surfing and what motivated you to create the first eco-friendly surf wax?
MM: I started surfing when I was around 10 years old. The motivation for creating the world’s first eco-friendly surf wax stemmed from growing up on my grandmother’s farm, and combining it with my passion and love for the ocean by doing something small that would have a big impact in the surf world, by using sustainable resources to create surf wax.
TSC: What are the main ingredients? How does its performance compare to others on the market?
MM: The main ingredients are all from our family farm that we grow like organic jasmine, organic apricot tree sap, and we use clay as well. For the scent we use organic strawberries and organic raspberries, too. The performance of the surf wax is better or equal than the traditional surf waxes on the market, as we wanted to show that having an organic surf wax would not compromise quality.
TSC: Where are your products sold?
MM: Our products are found in just about every surf shop, and liquor store. They are available in over 32 countries as well.
TSC: We found even them in 7/11 in San Clemente on our last trip to Trestles! Are there any other causes you’re passionate about?
MM: Living and eating healthy is something that I am passionate about with my family. Overall, I am passionate about having organic products and renewable energy becoming more mainstream in our society.
